Unlike many other types of poetry, free verse poems are not restricted by a specific form or meter. They can be written about anything that inspires the writer, such as a beautiful sunset or a fleeting moment.
The modern tradition of English-language free verse began with Walt Whitman, who published multiple editions of his Leaves of Grass between 1855 and 1892. Other early free-verse poets included Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound.
