The Black Keys
Those hordes of black-clad rock fans who thronged SXSW this week were rewarded with two hours of supremely performed blues and rock. The rain-soaked, windblown crowd roared with appreciation as the duo slammed through favorites like “Everlasting Light”, tender boogie from Brothers and newer tracks from Dropout Boogie.
There aren’t many bands out there with the same kind of old-fashioned credibility that the Black Keys have. From unfashionable Akron, they play guitar-based rock music at a time when it’s supposed to have gone the way of the dinosaur. And they do it at a high level that can fill arenas.
That’s not to say the duo don’t have their share of struggles. This is a frank rock documentary that shows their rocky history — with the usual squabbles, drug addictions and insecurity — but also highlights the fact that they are both incredibly talented musicians. They can communicate musically on a wavelength most others could only dream of.
